FATAL ACCIDENTS

Westport, August 16.

A fatal accident occurred on the Westport Coal Company’s incline last night. A boy named WouldUh was sent down from DennUton at 4 p.m. with a message, and, not returning, a search was made. Tne boy was found by hia father at midnight, under the trestle- work at a part of the incline known as McDonalds Hill. One leg was nearly severed from his body, and he is supposed to have bled to death. The boy went up from the bottom of the incline at dark in the last truck run, which stopped at the top of the lowest trestle. It is supposed he got eat and attempted to walk the remaining distance, but was caught up by the truck and run over. Christchurch, August 16.

Isaac Mawson, an old settler, was drowned in the river Selwyn this morning. The river was greatly , swollen, but Mawson had succeeded - in crossing nearly to the opposite bank when the bjiggy turned over, and he was washed away. Gretmouth, August 30.

An accident occurred at River View, near Ahaura, in the claim of John Thomas and William Reece. Whilst standing at the head of the claim, the bank gave way, precipitating both 60ft, almost perpendicularly. Thomas was covered up, and Reec?, who escaped uninjured, obtained assistance. Thomas, when extricated, was found seriously crushed on the head and buck, and was brought down in a canoe to the Hospital.
