STRANGE PROCEEDINGS AT AUCKLAND.

Auckland, August 15,

Some sensation was caused in Newmarket to-day by the arrest of a well-known butcher of that place, named Edward Dewar Richards, on a charge of unlawfully and maliciously committing d image to a house, the property of Benjamin Tanner, Richards is well known in connection with the recent bigamy case, and his domestic troubbs are connected with the present charge. He was married some few years ago to a woman named Kelly, by whom he had several children. In a moment of fondness for his offspring, he made over to them his ell)p and dwelling-house at Newmarket, and some time afterwards went through the Court. It would appear that he repented of his generosity, and desired to have the deed destroyed. This change of mind led to domestic unhappiness, which ended in the wife being charged at the Supreme Court with bigamy. She was acquitted, and went to live at the North Shore. Soon afterwards it became known that Mrs Richards had sold the property while Richards himself held posession, Tanner, the purchaser, endeavored to get into the premises, but failed. Proceedings were taken, and have been going on for some time. Last week, Richards, it ia alleged, moved a portion of the house off the ground, and yesterday, it ia said, he sold the remainder. Whether this is so or not remains to be proved, but at all events the house was found this morning razed to the ground, Thos. Cooper, solicitor on behalf of Tanner, proceeded to Newmarket, and had the warrant put into execution. At the Supreme Court to-day, judgment was given against Richards in a claim for rent and occupation of the house, which ia slated to be a perfect wreck, only the walls standing, Tue damage la estimated at £2OO.
