CHIEF OFFENDER SENTENCED TO BE FLOGGED.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, S-ptember 12.

A prisoner named O’Connor, undergoing* sentence of four years’ penal servitndein Lyttel. ton Gaol, became very insubordinate this morning, and assaulted the Chief Warder and another officer. Some other prisoners also fell out of the ranks, evidently intent upon ccea'ing a disturbance, but the whole of the warders being on the spot, having just paraded, the disturbance wag at once quelled. The Visiting Justices were summoned to attend, and held an inquiry, and O’Connor has been sentenced to receive twenty lashes to-morrow, besides a term of confinement. The other would-be rioters were also punished.
