BT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN VICTORIA. THE LATE MYSTERIOUS MEDICAL CASE. KKOTBU’S TELEGRAMS. (Received October 4, 1.40 p.m.) Melbourne, October 4. A destructive fire occurred last night at Richmond, in the premises occupied by Nation and Co., builders. The damage is estimated at £3OOO, which is covered by insurance. The Government has declined to grant! Dr. Barker an inquiry into the charges made against him in coneetion with the late Mrs Stent, as it is considered to be unnecessary. Dr, Barker will not therefore resign his, position on the Victorian Medical Board, as was required by the Government. Sydney, October 4. In the Legislative Assembly last night a resolution in favor of the removal of the duty on tea, and the substitution of a tax on wheat and flour, was, negatived. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, 465; New Zealand wheat, ex warehouse, 42s to 45s 6d. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 335. Australian tallow—Best beef, 44s 6d; best mutton, 465. The third series of wool sales closed to-day. The total quantity sold during the series has been 320,000 bales, and 40,000 have been held over for next auctions, which commence on November 21st. Good qualities of wool have closed at about the same prices as at the close of the May-June series, but inferior and faulty wools of all kinds were irregular, i (Received October 4, 10.5 p.m.) Melbourne, October 4; I Sailed, this afternoon—Union Company’s steamship .Manapouri, for the Biuff. Malting barley is in fair demand at 5s Id to 5s 3d. Shipping wheat continues firm at 6s lOd to 6s lid. New Zealand oats have advanced Id to 2d during the week, and are now firm and in active demand at 4s Id to 4s 3d for feeding, and 4s 4d to 4s 6d for milling qualities. Cetewayo and; Martindale have been scratched for the Melbourne Oup race. Mr William Hill, manager of the Colonial Bank of Australasia at Reedy Creek, who was arrested on the 2nd instant on a charge of being concerned in robbery of that branch on 12th August last, was brought up at the Police Court to-day, and remanded. Three hundred and forty-five thousand bales were offered, and 41,000 were held over till next series. The amount sold for export was 160,000 bales. At the close of the sales superior combing wools were firmer, but other sorts were below the Jiuly closing rates. The next series of sales will be held in November. At the Bordeaux Exhibition, twentyone prizes have bean awarded to Victorian wines. News from the Cape is to the effect that Masupba refuses to submit to the Boer authority, and Terotholi is about to attack him. (Received October 4, 7.35 p.m.) London, October 3, 6 a.m. The “ Times” states that the Highland Brigade and five other regiments will remain as a garrison at Cairo. Ten members of a new secret Society, termed the Patriotic Brothers, have been arrested at Armagh, and committed for trial. The inquiry into their case brought to light soma startling evidence, and revealed wide-laid plans for the systematic murder of landlords. Reply post-cards have been introduced. Mr John Dillon, M.P., has . been induced to postpone the resignation of his seat for Tipperary. Ease special per united press association. The situation in Basutoland is exceedingly critical. Masupha declines absolutely to submit to taxation. It is reported that a conspiracy for the dethronment of the King has been discovered in Servia.
