GREYTOWN.
(prom our own correspondent.) October 4. The Grey to wn Cricket Cl ub meeting, called for last Saturday night at the Institute, lapsed, only a few members being present. It was deemed advisable to adjourn, as the business to be done required a full attendance, in view of arrangements, Ac., for the coming season. The usual Church parade of the Rifle Volunteers, accompanied by their baud, took place last Sunday morning, the Church service at St. Luke’s being conducted by the Rev. Mr' Weston. There was a good attendance, and the whole affair was very effective. The monthly meeting of , the Greytowc Borough Council took place at tbe Council Chambers last Monday night. The business transacted was of a routine character, and of purely local import tnce. The usual meeting of the Wiohine River Board, appointed to be holden last night, lapsed for want of a quorum. Doubtless the rough weather bad much to do with tbe non-attend-ance. Anent the doings of this Corporation it is highly satisfactory to note the very efficient manner in which, with the small means they possesst, he protective works, under the direction of the working overseer, Mr J. Dorrell, are carried on. Daring tbe late heavy rains the immense volume of water flowing from the Wiohine Gorge pursued its course over the shingle-bed channels, and only in a few lowlying portions of the banks was there any overflow, and that but trifling compared to the periodical floods of years gone by. Last night at the Temperance Hall, according to advertisement, Mr Arnold, assistant master of the public school here, gave a most entertaiuing and instructive lecture upon chemistry, illustrated by experiments. Members and friends of the Juvenile Temperance and Improvement Society crowded tbe Hall, and the applause testified the" pleasure derived from the entertainment.
Yesterday, and again this morning, the public school cadets went through their inspection drill very creditably under the supervision of Sergeant-Major Bezar. Last night at .the Town Hall the Rifle Volunteer Corps of the borough went through their usual monthly inspection drill under Sergeant-Major Bezar. There was a very fair attendance, and the drill was considered satisfactory. It is well known in the district that one of the corps (Volunteer G. Saywell) is noted for his capability as a good shot, having scored remarkably high at sundry firing competitions. The company, in view of the coming Rifle Association firing at Dunedin, voted the sum of £5 towards his expenses, should he elect to go there and compete. -•
