Timabu, September 22. ’ Alexander Mcßratney, a very old resident in this district, committed suicide at Arowbenua this morning by shooting himself under the armpit. He was only married to his second wife a few days ago. No cause is assigned for the deed. Mr James Brace’s new flour-mill was formally opened to-day. AU the machinery has been imported direct from the United States. The building consists of six stories, and is 76ft high to the bed of the roof. Its dimensions are 118 ft by 71ft, and it is estimated to turn out 400 sacks of flour per day, besides oatmeal, barley, &o. It is believed to Be,the largest and most complete mill in the'colony. A private race took place on the course yesterday between two local horses, Mr J. ■Corbett’s Captain and Mr J. L. Crawley’s black mare Brenda; distance, H miles; 7 hardies. About 100 spectators were present. The race was for £25 a side, and at the. last .minute the stakes were make £3O a side. Captain took the race in hand very quickly, and won by three lengths. Tjs Aboha, September 22. ' The richest discovery made at Te Aroha yet has just been disclosed in the Bonanza, old prospectors’ claim. The reef is similar to the Shotover of old. Gold as rich as that was broken off by the “Mail’s” mining reporter this morning. Auckland, September 22. The Tramway Company have applied for extension of time from It to IS minutes intervals for running of tramcars, but the City Council refused to alter the conditions of contract.
