The Union Company’s s.s. Penguin arrived from Picton and Nelson at 1.40 this morning. She leaves for Lyttelton only at noon. Tho Union Company’s new steamer Omapere left Timatu last night for Wellington direct, and may therefore be looked for to-night, or early to-morrow. The steamers Napier, for Koxton, and Mohaka, for Blenheim, sailed last night. Tho S.S. Hula left Wanganui at I.SO a.m. yesterday, crossed the bar at 2.15, and arrived in port at 1.30 p.m. Experienced fresh westerly winds throughout. Her newb-rler. whieh has just been completed at Messrs Seager’s foundry, and Was taken down to the wharf yesterd v evening, will be placed aboard immediately. The steamer will probably resume her trade in a week’s lime, audit is expected she will steam fully 10 knots an hour. The Union Company’s s s. Tarnbull and Co. yesterday, from Patea, stating that the steamer Wakatu had been successfully floated. The vessel is reported as uninjured, and was alongside the wharf at Patea last evening. She is expected to arrive here to-day. It la imperative-that a rigid inquiry should be made as to the state of the entrance to the Patea river. However undesirable the performance may be, so far as the discontented p issenger, who is all but dying to catch the train, is concerned,, there is no denying the fact that tojaee such a steamer as tho Manapourl spin round almost in her own length inside the basin is both pleasing and instructive. Captain Logan afforded spectators a si ht of that kind yesterday morning. The sensitiveness of so large a steamer to tho slightest motion of tho little wheel In the wheolhause was truly wonderful.—Press,” September 2*.
