PROPOSED ELECTRIC LIGHT COMPANY.

An influential meeting of citizens interested in the introduction of the electric light into business premises and private houses in the four principal towns of the celony was held at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. There were about thirty persons present, and considerable interest was apparently taken in the proceedings. Mr Joe Dransfield occupied the chair, and referred in brief terms to the business before the meeting, and called on Mr W. T. L. Travers to explain certain proposals which that gentleman had taken considerable pains to compile. Mr Travers then spoke at some length as to the advantage of the electric light over gas, and drew comparisons to show the superiority .of the former not only in - giving-a more brilliant light, but as being less expensive and far healthier to those using it. He instanced one town in England of; 25,000 inhabitants, where the municipal body had a difference with the gas company, and where the whole of the electric light plant had been laid in seven days. It was found to work to the entire satisfaction of the citizens. That the electric light would ultimately supersede gas throughoufc.the|world was si fact which nobody who had

studied the subject would think of disputing. He also gave a guarantee to the meeting that the preliminary expenses, in the event of the project falling through, wou’d not be borne by the local promoters. With regard to the headquarters of the proposed company, he had no reason to believe that there would be any jealousy between the different centres, and he had the assurance of a prominent citizen of Christchurch that the promoters could depend upon a large measure of support in that city. Mr Travers concluded his remarks by proposing the following resolution ; —“ That, in the opinion of this meeting, it is expedient that a company should be formed, to be called the New Zealand Electric LightCompauy, Limited, to undertake the business of public and private lighting, and the application of electricity to purposes of locomotion, with a capital sufficient to enable it to carry on business in all parts of New Zealand, and that the following gentlemen be appointed to prepare the memorandum and articles of association, and prospectus of the Company, namely, his Worship the Mayor, Captain Rose, Hon. J. Martin, M.L.C., Messrs J. E. Brown, M.H.8., W. Dawson, C. Pownall, J. McDowell, J. Dramfield, L. L. Harris, Knapp, J. Plimmer, E. W. Mills, G. V. Shannon, H. F. Logau, R. Greenfield, E. Harcourt, A. A. Barnett, J. Lawson, and the mover, with power to add.” Seconded by Hon. John Martin, and carried unanimously. After a short discussion favorable to the proposal, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Travers for the trouble he had taken in bringing the matter before the meeting. This concluded the business.
