Ir will be well within the remembrance of all our readers that mention was made some months ago of the possibilities of a good trade being opened up with New ,Caledonia by exporters of New Zealand flour. : It was shown that all supplies of grain and. meal, for the French: settlement there were necessarily sea borne, mainly from Sydney or Adelaide, and that New Zealand had hitherto been shut out . from competition in a trade wherein the supply ’ of a good article, such as New Zealand can well produce, was the chief desideratum. A telegram we publish to-day relates the satisfactory news that a shipment of flour sent from Canterbury to Noumea by a local firm has given so much satisfaction that the Government authorities at Noumea intend in future to stipulate that a portion, at least, ■ of the supplies they need shall be drawn from this colony. The news is eminently good, especially seeing that New Zealand grain and flour are so steadily advancing in repute in all other markets of ' the. world. It certainly is not going beyond the bounds of reasonable expectation to hope that, within a-very short period, New Zealand brands of flour will be in as high repute as the famed “Hart’s” of Adelaide, which has gained its reputation solely from the circumstance of being always alike- I —the brand carrying its own' credential.; New Zealand b shippers may - command an < equal success if they will only bear in mind, and act thereupon, that if

they would command a good price they must always and most faithfully supply a good article. The opening up of trade "with Noumea may not, in itself, be a very great thing to boast of, but it presages greater things in the immediate hereafter, and thus becomes a subject of most hearty Congratulation.
