In pursuance of the Regulation of Elections Act, 1881, I, JAMES HAY, Returning Officer for the Electoral District of Thorndon, do hereby give notice that, in consequence of a poll having been demanded at the nomination of candidates for the said Electorate, which took place this day, a Poll will be taken at the following polling places of the said District, on FRIDAY, the 9th day of December, 1881, commencing at 9 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m. : The Premises adjoining Mr R. Burrett’s Stationery Establishment, opposite Government House, Wellington (principal) ; Premises formerly occupied as the “ New Zealand Times ” Office, Willis-street, Wellington. JAMES HAY, Returning Officer. Ist December, 1881. 7997 _SS) THE PUBLIC TRUST OFFICE OF NEW ZEALAND. Any person may appoint the Public Trustee executor and trustee under his will or codicil. Any present trustee may transfer the management of trust property to the Public Trustee, who will thereupon hold such property upon the original trusts attaching thereto. Any person, company, association, or public body within or without the colony may place any property belonging to them in charge of the Public Trustee upon trust for such uses as may be defined in the deed creating the trust. Any Building, Land or Friendly Society may, by its rules provide that property belonging to it may be placed in the Public Trust Office, for such trusts and uses and with such powers as may be defined in or by the said rules. The advantages offered are : 1. State Guarantee against peculation, fraud or dishonesty. 2. All proposed investments are considered by a Board consisting of the Honorable Colonial Treasurer, the Attorney-General, the Comptroller and Auditor-General, the Government Insurance Commissioner, and the Public Trustee ; careful consideration of all securities offered is therefore ensured. The Public Trustee in his corporate capacity, never dies, never leaves the COUNTRY, and NEVER BECOMES INCAPACITBD, thus avoiding the many inconveniences resulting from frequent fresh appointments of trustees necessitated by death, change of abode, or mental or bodily infirmity. 4. Punctuality and promptitude in the remittance of periodical payments to beneficiaries under trust or will to any part of the colony or elsewhere at which it may be desired that payments should be made. 5. The effective check which is called into operation before any monies can be drawn from the Public Trustee’s account. 0. Reasonable charges : On estates, such as are now being considered, the Public Trustee is authorised to charge 1J percent on all receipts, and li per cent on disbursements, and one quarter per cent on all monies invested. No change is made for obtaining probate, nor for passing stamp and property tax return, nor for correspondence, however voluminous. Thus the saving to estates placed in this office is considerable. R. C. HAMERTON, Public Trustee. CITY COUNCIL, ALTERATION OF BUILDING REGULATIONS. The following By-law having been passed at a Special Meeting of the City Council, held on the 17th November, 1881, will be confirmed at the Ordinary Meeting of the Council to be held on the 15th December, 1881, at 7.30 p.m.:— 1. That No. 1 Building District, as defined in the Building Regulations By-law of 9th September, 1879, be altered so as to exclude Town Sections 199, 201, and that part of 203 lying to the westward of Herbert-street, and the whole of that portion of the district lying to the eastward of Cuba-street extension, with the exception of the Market Hall Reserve. Also that portion of the Thorndon Reclamation lying to the north of Bunny-street, between Thorndon-quay and the Railway Reserve ; such excluded portions to become portion of No. 2 Building District. 2. That within No. 1 District, buildings may be erected of which the external walls shall be iron, of the character and dimensions as described in the following schedule ;—. SCHEDULE— The walls of buildings may be constructed with studs of H or T iron of suitable sizes, according to height or dimensions of building, and that each fifth joint bo plated on each side with fin boiler plate, bolted through the joint diagonally every two feet with fin screw bolts. The boiler plates to have at scarf plates of similar iron of same thickness riveted on to them, and the joists to be so fixed as to tie the outer walls together. The covering to be of iron of not less than No. 16 gauge. All mouldings or projections to be of iron of similar gauge, and parapets to be carried up to a similar height as prescribed for brick buildings, and to be covered both inside and outside with iron of the quality specified for mouldings, &o. —viz., not less than No, 16 gauge. 3. That the last sentence of Clause 3 of the aforesaid by-law of 9th September, 1879, be repealed, and the following substituted in lien thereof :—“ After inspection as aforesaid by the City Surveyor, the plans and specifications may be removed from his custody, but if so, they must be liable to inspection by the City Surveyor, or his appointee, at any time during business hours.” |£4. That the following new clause be added to the Regulations ' —“ If, in the opinion of the City Council, a full compliance with these Regulations, or any of them, in respect of any proposed repairs or additions to any existing buildings would needlessly affect with injury the course and operations of business, or he attended with great loss and inconvenience to any persons, without a corresponding benefit to the community, the City Council may, on special application, relax or modify the same, provided that such other. terms as they may impose be complied with by the applicant; and, further, provided that in case of any proposed departure from the existing Regulations, notice of the same shall be adveitised by the applicant for at least seven days before the application shall be considered by the Council.
