Two Sisters of Mercy arrived by the Zealondia fi r the Sacred Heart Convent at Timaru. Also Mr. Chapman, the advance agent of Madame Welching, violinist. He states she will shortly visit Auckland. Mr. Stark, who contested City West, returned in the Zealaudia to Auckland. He came by the new route across the American continent. It is twelve hours longer than the old one, but avoids the snow-line, and is a better route. The Hawea left this morning with the Southern portion of the San Francisco mails. A boy fell overboard as the vessel started, but a buoy was thrown to him and he was rescued. A. Eaglesim, an old gentleman, while in the City shower bathroom, slipped on the floor, and received concussion of the brain. Oamaru, May 30. Messrs. Shrimski and De Latour, M.H.R.’s, will visit Maerewhenua goldfield on Thursday, after which the latter will go to Naseby to address his constituents. A school of a dozen whales was seen by the brigantine Helena about eight miles from Oamaru harbor. They are supposed to be sperm whales. Reefton, May 30. J. E. Bowman reports for the last woek : The United Alpine Company reduced 150 tons quartz for a yield of lOOozs. amalgam, from the top plates. The Golden Fleece crushed 135 tons for 151ozs. lOdwts. amalgam, from the top plates. Nil Desperandum tributers, for ten days, put through 192 tons quartz for UOozs. ISdwts. retorted gold. The Golden Treasure Company crushed 58 tons stone for 75ozs. retorted gold. The Tuamarina Company (Lyell), got 250zs. retorted gold from 50 tons quartz. Sellers" quotations are slightly in advance. Mr. G. G. Fitzgerald obtained a unanimous vote of confidence at Reefton, after addressing a largely attended meeting. Dunedin, May SO. Mr. Oliver addresses his constituents on Thursday night. , The Donedin Industrial Exhibition opens on the 10th June. The prospectus of the Meat Freezing and Exporting Company will be laid before a general meeting on Wednesday. An inquest was held to-day on the body of Thomas Ball, killed on the railway near Kensington on Friday ; the verdict was accidental death. Nothing was elicited to show how deceased came on the line. A hope was expressed that the occurrence prove a warning to trespassers. A prisoner escaped from the Botanical Garden to-day by putting on a warder’s coat, and strolling off in a most unconcerned manner. He was not missed for several minutes. He was serving a short sentence, which would expire to-morrow. It is stated that a man from Tuapeka was robbed of £2OO by pocket-picking at the Forbury Races on the Queen’s Birthday. A crowded meeting of sympathisers with the Irish Land League was held to-night. Resolutions were carried expressing sympathy. Subscription lists were opened, and a ladies’ committee formed. Napier, May 31. Hr. Clark, manager of the South Pacific Petroleum Company, telegraphs to the Herald that an analysis of the paraffin of the material found in the company’s claim, made by Mr. Dixon, public analyst at Sydney, shows 30 per cent, solid paraffin. The balance is composed of kerosene, 25 per cent. ; intermediate oils, 14 per cent.; heavy oils, 52 per cent.; carbon and loss, 11 per cent. ■ Balclutha, May 30. Mr. Thomson addressed his constituents tonight, and received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence.
