OUR WATER SUPPLY.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —It is apparent that some prompt action is required regarding our water supply, and if our astute City Councillors and their worthy officers will not do their duty, then let the people themselves take the matter in band, and get an. expert to make a thorough investigation ot those water works which cost so much. Myself and others would like to have the following questions answered—viz.— 1. How long our City Engineer has been absent on his visit to Patea, and who is to pay for the loss of his services ? 2. Who looks after the water matters in his absence at this critical juncture ? 3. Why is it that the City Council are not kept informed as to the quantity of water which flows, or should flow, into the reservoir, the quantity which is received by the distributing basin, and the quantity supplied to the public ? i. How was it the Engineer, on a recent occasion, was doubtful whether or not the watershed had received rain when the city had ? Is there no guage to tell, or are there no other means of finding out so important a circumstance 1 There is evidently a reprehensible amount of uncertainty about this important subject, and a callousness on the part of our local authorities which is most unaccountable. Without ample proof, the public will not, I am sure, believe that this extraordinary scarcity of water could not have been prevented by proper foresight and judicious management.—l am, etc., Aquarius.
