CITY COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Council will be held at 7.30 this evening. There will be a large amount of important business to transact, including the consideration and acceptance of a number of tenders — construction of Wainniomata tunnel, erection of a fish market, &c. Reports will be presented from the Hospital, Wharf, Finance, Fire Brigade, and Public Works Committees. Councillor Browu is to move —“ lu the opinion of the Council, the present constitution of the Finance Committee is an invidious exclusion of three councillors out of thirteen, and that therefore it be reduced to a smaller number, say one councillor from each ward, or else consist of the whole Council.” The Works Committee’s report is aa follows: —“1. That the committee cannot recommend that the question of Mr. Climie’s claim against the Corporation be re-opened. 2. That there are no funds available for continuance of the grant to the Wellington Fire Police. 3. That the question of providing a supply of water to the Hutt from the Wainui main has been referred to the Waterworks Committee to report at an early date, 4. That in consequence of complaints as to the present scale of hackney carriage fares, the Inspector baa been instructed to prepare an amended scale for the approval of the Council. 5. That the City Valuer has been instructed to report as to the most appropriate manner of allocating to the various wards those new portions of the City constituted by the Wellington City Boundaries Act, 1-878, and recommend that the Governor in Council be petitioned to give effect to such appropriation in terms of the 4th section of the Municipal Corporation Act Amendment Act, 1880.” The committee recommend “ That the street drain on the Terrace be continued as far as Mrs, Burns’ residence ; estimated cost, £lB. That the formation of Wallace-street and Bidwell-stroet, as approved of by tho Council, be proceeded with at once on payment of the amounts guaranteed by Messrs. Smith and others. That the footpaths in Lloyd-street bo formed and gravelled, at a cost not exceeding £2O. That the previous resolution of the Council relative to the fencing of the road through the Town Belt to the Island Bay estate be adhered to. That a water service be laid down Little Pipitea-street. That accounts amounting to £BIO 7s Id he passed for payment.” The Hospital Committee report “ That they had under consideration a letter from the Colonial Secretary enquiring whether the Corporation will take over the administration of the hospital and charitable aid as before, on condition of their receiving tho subsidy of 10 s. for nine months, ending 31st March, 1831, and of Government defraying one-balf of the total cost of administration. The Committee recommends that the Government offer be acceded to. They also report that a code of rules is being prepared by the Town Clerk with the assistance of Councillor Diver, and that they will bo submitted to the Honorary Medical Staff before approval by th e Council, They also recommend that £2OO worth of drugs and surgical instruments be ordered by tho next mail,”— The Finance Committee will report—“ That in terms of the 161 at clause of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, it is necessary that Commissioners be appointed for - tho purpose of investing the Sinking Fund of tho City Improvements Loan, 1879, and recommend that the Town Clerk and City Treasurer bo appointed as such Commissioners, and that the first instalment (£700) of tho Sinking Fund bo invested in an approved mortgage on security of freehold property.” Tho Council will, before taking other business, resolve itself into I a special meeting, to consider the reducing of tho price of water for other than domestic purposes from Is. 6d. to Is, por 1000 gallons.
