ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

THORNDON SCHOOL DISTRICT.

The annual meeting of residents of the Thorudou School District was held last night, Mr. Jonas Woodward being in the chair. The report was as follows :—“ The schools have continued as full as formerly, and are in a fair state of efficiency. The Board granted to the head master of the principal school leave of absence for six months, during which the charge of the school was devolved upon the second master. The committee has pleasure in testifying to the diligence and ability which were displayed by that gentleman, but the school unavoidably suffered to some extent, through the absence of the head master. As he resumed bis duties on the 12th November, ‘ there is no doubt that the school will soon recover its former position. An infant school has been opened in the Sunday school room belonging to the Wesleyan Church, in Moles* worth-street. The school was placed under the charge of Miss Devereux, and has been conducted with efficiency and success. New schools are now in course ot erection, which promise to bo in every way suitable and commodious. A normal school is also being erected in close contiguity to the new schools, and being of similar style, the two form a pile of buildings which will be an important addition to the educational advantages of the town, and an ornament to the neighborhood. In the competition for the Provincial Scholarship at the College, the scholarship was gained by Alfred Easton, of this school. Respecting this matter the committee had to take a decided stand, as the College authorities issued a list of subjects which were altogether outside of the curriculum of this and the other schools under the Wellington Board of Education, and the Board having joined in the remonstrance made by the committee, the Governors of the College withdrew the subjects that had been complained of, thus leaving the competition fairly open to the scholars of the Board schools.—J. Woodward, Chairman.” In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman drew attention to the conflict of authority that appeared to exist between the Board and the committees ; as a consequence of which he knew that at least two secretaries of committees had determined to discontinue their services. He also expressed his regret that the town should be divided into so many districts, requiring separate committees, and thus prevent proper interest being taken in the appointment of committees, which were unable to employ proper officers; while in Dunedin, where the whole city is included in one district, a very different state of things prevailed. The following gentlemen were then elected for the ensuing year:—Messrs. Woodward, Smith, Koch, Richardson, Parsons, J. Magionity, and J. A. Allan. Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring chairman (Mr. Woodward), to the secretary and treasurer (Mr. A. T, Maginnfty), and to the retiring committemen (Messrs. Knowles and Garrard). A meeting of the Lewly-appointed committee was held afterwards, when Mr. Jonas Woodward was again elected chairman, and Mr. T. Garrard secretary and treasurer. TE RRaCE SCHOOL DISTRICT. The annual meeting for the election of a committee for the Terrace School was held last evening in the schoolroom, Mr. Quick in the chau\ The chairman having read the advertisement convening the meeting, called upon Mr. Gore (chairman) to read the committee’s report, which went to show that the school is in a satisfactory state, and that the' operations of the past year were attended with great success. Mr. Kennedy (secretary) read the balance-sheet. It was proposed by Mr. Evans, and seconded by Air. Didsbury, that the report be adopted, which was carried. The meeting then proceeded to elect the new committee, which resulted as follows :—Captain Edwin,. Messrs. Gore, Lindsay, Heaps, Quick, Palmer,, and Didsbury. Mr. Gore, on behalf of the retiring committee, expressed the great obligations the committee were under to their secretary. Mr. Kennedy, He (Mr. Gore) felt that a great part of the success, so far as the committee were concerned, was due to the untiring exertions of Mr. Kennedy, He was sure that he expressed the feelings of every member of the late committee when he said they all regretted that, through his removal out of the school district, Mr. Kennedy was disqualified, from holding a seat on the committee. The head master of the school also expressed his deep regret at the prospect of parting company with the late secretary, Mr. Kennedy, A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the: proceedings. TE ARO SCHOOL DISTRICT. Very little interest was taken by the householders in the election of the School Committee, only fifteen householders being present. * The Venerable Archdeacon Stock was elected chairman. The report aud balance-sheet of the old committee were read and adopted. The following were then elected —Committeemen —Messrs W. Wallis, F. H. Fraser. T. Holt, Ven. Archdeacon Stock, R*. Gardner, L. H. B. Wilson, and G. Tattle. A meeting of the committee was held afterwards, when Mr. R,. Gardner was elected chairman, and Mr. L. H B. Wilson hon. sec. and treasurer. KAIWARRA SCHOOb DISTRICT.
