An attempt was made to-day by a mounted man to bail up some Chinese living near Guudagai. The matter was reported to the police, and they are now in pursuit of the supposed bushranger. In the Legislative Council last night the Hen. James Watson, Colonial Treasurer, announced that the Government had no intention to propose additional taxation in lieu of the intended excise duties on colonial beer and tobacco, which were recently rejected or withdrawn. The steamer Wakatipu has sailed for Wellington. Melbourne, Thursday. Parliament re-assembled on Tuesday, and there was a scone of continued excitement in the Assembly last night. The quantity of new arrivals to be included in the sales has been restricted by the Importers Committee to 250,000 bales. January 22. The steamship Sultan has arrived from Australia. The fortnightly mail service of the Orient Steamship Company to the colonies will commence with the departure of the Chimborazo on the 7th of February. In future the Orient Company’s steamers will not carry any mails either to or from the Australian ports. A large meeting of Home Rule members has been held, at which, on the motion of the O’Donoghue, a vote of sympathy was passed, with the Irish peasantry in their distress, and with their resistance to the landlords. A resolution was also adopted at the same meeting, binding the Home Rule members to maintain an independent attitude in Parliament. The Daily News of to-day publishes a telegram from Afghanistan, stating that Mahomed Jan has gathered a large force, and is now threatening the British positions in and around Cabul. Berlin, Jauuary_2l. It is stated here that Germany intends to acquire some of the South Sea Islands, in order to increase her influence in the Pacific. Dr. Richard Krauel, who has gone to Sydney, has been appointed Consul-General of the German Empire for Australia. King George's Sound, Thursday. The P. and O. Mr. Buchanan has tabled a motion of censure on the Governor for commuting the sentences of the bushrangers Williams and Bennett, Four men were seen tampering with the telegraph line near Benalla. They had horses with them, and it is supposed that they are the Kellys, An inspector and a number of troopers have started in pursuit. Melbourne, Thursday. A Mauritius telegram states that since the Bth of January 900 tons of sugar have been bought for Adelaide, and orders are in good demand for tonnage for New Zealand. The market is firm and active. New Zealand milling oats wanted at 3s. The R.M.S. Assam, with the Suez mail, was sighted off Albany, at 9 o’clock this morning. (MELBOURNE ARGUS SPECIAL.) London, January 21. Dr.-James Russell Lowell, who is at present United States Minister at Madrid, has been appointed to represent that country in England. The Government has refused to fix a special postage rate tor letters sent to Australia by the Orient line of steamers, A resolution to vote half a million dollars (about £50,000) towards the Irish Distress Fund has been proposed in the United States Congress, and referred to a special committee to report upon. The Standard states that the report of the capture of Tohilisoar from the Russians by the Tekke-Turoomaus is confirmed by authentic testimony. A Berlin telegram in The Times says that the Minister of State has informed the Saxony Chambers that the Federal Council was discussing a project to found convict colonies in the Pacific, but had not come to any definite decision on the point. The Daily Telegraph adds that Bismarck, in giving his support to the Polynesian Company, formed to fake over Godeffroy’s business, intended to support this project also. 1 January 22. The Polynesian Company’s shares aro being eagerly taken up in all Iparts of Germany (except Hamburg.
