RESIGNATION OF SIR WILLIAM FITZHERBERT FOR THE HUTT.
ACCEPTANCE OP THE PRESIDENCY OP THE COUNCIL. Sir William Fitzberbert has definitely decided upon accepting the Presidency of the Legislative Council, which position had beep offered to him by the Government. In his retiring address to the electors of the Hutt, he concludes thus “In many fierce political struggles I have fearlessly advocated in your midst liberal and advanced views of policy, and I shall cherish, as long as I live, a grateful memory of the generous support you always gave mb.” . There is likely to be a keen contest for the seat vacated by Sir William. . Messrs. Mason, Jackson, and Hutchison are spoken of as likely candidates; whilst efforts are being made by the Government to induce Dr. Buffer to stand for the electorate.
