Since the opening of the sales 235,000 bales of wool have been og;red. Wool continues firm and in active demand, chiefly in greasy qualities, which rule a half-penny higher. Scoured has advanced id. to Id. per lb. June 11. Colonel Biddulph has been appointed High Commissioner at Cyprus. AlelboukNE, Thursday. The msil summary is to May 9:—ln a destructive fire at Honburgb, in Russia, which lasted two days, two churches, 919 houses, and 292 shops were burnt down. It is feared that the extreme measures to suppress Nihilism 1 will provoke a revolutionary outbreak in Russia. The Pope cordially received Cardinal Newman, The Queen has returned to Windsor. In Canada there is a political crisis, consequent on the Alarquis of Lome refusing to dismiss the Governor of Quebec, as recommended by the Ministers. Spotted typhus fever has reappeared in Astrakhan. Yakoob Khan was received with much ceremonial at the British camp, Gandamak. A great military demonstration took place, and Yakoob Khan was much impressed witii the sight. Sydney, Thursday. The Legislative Council has thrown out the Bill proposing to abolish the penalty o; death for rape. The Amending Land Act has been passed by the Legislative Assembly.
