SPORTING.
(PUB PKESS AGENCrO WAIMATE STEEPLECHASES. Christchurch, Wednesday. The Waimate Steeplechases took place today, and about 400 people were present. The weather was cloudy, but the air was sharp and bracing, and the course was in capital condition. Rowdyism was the order of tho day, several fights' having occurred, and in one instance had the appearance of a regular faction fight. The Waimate Steeplechase Handicap, of 100 sovs., was won by Butler's Agent ; Murtagli's Harkaway second ; and Goodman’s Ivanhoe third. The Maiden Plate, of 50 sovs., was won by Lyford’s Silverstream ; Calling’s Naumai second ; and Murtagh’s Black Prince third. The Steeplechase Handicap, of 75 sovs., was won by Butler’s Agent; Chilling’s Noumai second ; and Muir’s Lone Hand third. For the Consolation Handicap, of 40 sovs., Mclvor’s Loch Lomond took first place ; Maitland's Loyalty second ; ; and Goodman’s Ivanhoe, third., In this race, Sunrise fell over a sod fence and broke his back, but his jockey escaped unhurt.
