RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Monday, Mat 26. (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq., E.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Four inebriates were dealt with in the usual way. A STOWAWAY. James King was charged with obtaining a passage surreptitiously from Lyttelton to Wellington. Prisoner said that he was drunk on the wharf at Lyttelton, just as the steamer was leaving, fie fell off the wharf into the water and was pulled on board the steamer. The purser of the steamer stated that the accused never said anything about falling into the water until he was locked up, One of the passengers stated that the accused did fall into the water. In answer to the Bench, witness said the accused had a swag on board with him. His Worship characterised the case as a somewhat doubtful one, and gave the prisoner the benefit of the doubt, and discharged him.
CIVIL CASES. Judgment Summonses.—A. B. Watts y. D. Bell, claim £l3 65.; ordered to pay one-half of the debt and costs in four weeks, and the balance in eight weeks, or six weeks' imprisonment. Twentyman v. J. McDonald, claim £35 9s. 9d.; ordered to pay the debt and costs in four weeks, or three months' imprisonment. In the following cases judgment was given for the plaintiffs with costs : —Jacobowitoh v. Austin, claim £5; Stratford v. McKirdy, claim £l9 18s.; Scott v. Shappere, claim £1 7s- 2d.; N.Z. Titanic Steel and Iron Company v. Stevenson, claim £1; Same v. McKirdy, claim £2O. Taylor v. Phillips, claim £4 25.; judgment for plaintiff for £3 Is.
