DUNEDIN BIRTHDAY RACES. (PER PRESS AGENCY.) Dunedin, Monday. The races postponed from Saturday came off to-day. They were rendered far more pleasant to the spectators by the fine weather which prevailed to-day than they would have been if held on Saturday, when it rained hard. The attendance of the public was however very poor, not more than 800 people being present at the commencement of the proceedings, but many people went out during the afternoon, and thus brought up the number to about the average of these winter meetings. The following were the results : HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, Of 30 sots. Two miles and a distance, over ten flights of hurdles 4ft. Oin. blffn. Mr H. Courier's ch g Kildare, aged, lOst 31b (J. Kildare led over the first jump, followed by Black Bess ,who nearly fell but was recovered cleverly), and Mountain Queen close up, Romance being la.it. In rounding the first turn the favorite drew fully ten lengths away from Mountain Queen, who was five lengths in front of Romance, Black Bess having already commenced to fall back. In this order they came round tiU approaching the stand the second time, when Romance passed Mountain Queen within a length of Kildare, Black Bess still in the rear at the back of the course. Romance commenced to draw up to Kildare, and amidst great excitement they rose at the last fence together, but Homance unfortunately stumbled on landing, and staggering, threw Harrison, thus enabling Kildare to win comfortably, for Mountain Queen shot her bolt and finished a bad second. Black Bess third. Time, 4min. 63seo. MAIDEN PLATE, Of 25 sovs. Ons mile and a quarter. Weight for age. For horses that have not won on advertised prize exceeding E 25. Mr T. After two false starts, a good one was effected. Dalesman cut out the running and led past the stand, with Scamp and Bothwell close up, Smith’s pair next, slightly before Tiflis. At half a mile, however, Bothwell had supplanted Scamp, and Daysman forming the running, the field spread out iu straggling order. On the far side of the course Swede made his effort, aud passing Scamp, got level with Dalesman, and the pair came up to the entrance to the straight not more than a length behind Bothwell. Here a pretty race was anticipated, but Swede was soon done, and almost immediately Allan was flogging Dalesman, while Bothwell came on full of running, and won comfortably by three lengths, Sir James a good third, Swede fourth, Tiflis and Scamp whipping in. Time, 2min. 32sec. BIRTHDAY HANDICAP, Of 80 sovs : the second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stake. One mile and three-quarter-. Mr J. Chaff's b c Atlantic, 3yrs, (Ist 31b (A. Hastie) 1 Mr A. O'. The first to show in front was York, and passing the stand he lay half a length in front of Chancellor, who was some distance before Blue Peter and Atlantic. Bounding the turn Blue Peter closed on Chancellor, who fell back behind Atlantic also, till he was a dozen lengths iu rear of all. Here, just half a mile from home, Hastie gave Atlantic a couple of smart cuts with the whip, and immediately shot up to Blue Peter. The pair simultaneously challenged York, whom they soon had in difficulties. Turning into the straight abreast, an exciting struggle between Blue Peter and Atlantic took place, the whip falling on both, but before reaching the Stand the grey horse compounded, and Atlantic won, with something in hand, by a length. Chancellor, whom Allen began to ride vigorously when he saw York was getting beaten, finished third, three lengths off. York was last. Time, 3miu. 28aec.
