Tauranga, Monday. The Commission re the Taupo sat today. The evidence of Captain Marks, the Harbor-master and Collector of Customs, was taken, but nothin" important transpired. The Harbor-master admitted the position of the buoy had been altered on the new Admiralty chart, but he did not consider it necessary to make any alteration or report to the Marine Department. Auckland, Monday. The hospital at present contains 99 inmates. Miss Leake, the actress, who accidentally broke her leg by falling in Victoria-street, is doing wed. The weather report shows that the total rainfall in five days last week was 3 llOiu., the largest amount in the same period since 1867. The Volunteer review to-day was well attended. Major Withers commanded. The fc it dc joie and marching past were well executed. The Major in a eomplimeniarv address presented Captain Clarke’s cup and belt. At the inquest on the body of William Smith, bricklayer, which was found at Shelly Beach, the medical evidence showed there was a pistol wound in the skull. A pistol was found, discharged, near the body. The evidence led to the conclusion that the deceased had been insane, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly. A boy named John Atchison was considerably injured about the face and abdomen at Maketu on Friday by the accidental explosion of a gun. Peritonites, It is feared, will ensue. At the Police Court to-day, Ellen Whittaker was charged with violently assaulting Thomas Truman by striking him on the head with an axe. As the man was in the hospital, the case was remanded. Sarah Galbraith was charged with concealment of the birth of her female child, by placing the dead body in a watercloset. The Court was cleared during the hearing of the case. The prisoner cried bitterly when the charge was read. The magistrate considered the evidence insufficient to convict, and prisoner was discharged. Napier, Monday. McLennan was brought up at the 11. M. Court this morning, charged with the murder of his wife. The Crown Prosecutor conducted the case. It is expected to last three or four days. The annual shot and shell practice of the Napier Artillery took place to-day. The firing was exceedingly good, far better than on any previous occasion. Aftea the practice the battery and some friends were entertained at luncheon. Christchurch, Monday. Frank Lewis was brought up this morning charged with setting fire to his oyster shop in Cathedral-square yesterday morning. He was remanded for a week, on bail, himself £2OO and two sureties of £IOO each. Wm Barnard, charged with sheep-stealing, did not answer to his name. His bail was estreated, and a warrant issued for his arrest. A special session of the Diocesan Synod will be held to-morrow, to consider, amongst other business, the fallowing motion :—That the Church Property Trustees be instructed to raise, in such manner as may seem to them most desirable, a sum not exceeding five thousand pounds, to be divided into two equal suras, one to be given as a further grant towards the erection of the Cathedral, the other to be distributed in such manner as the standing committee may direct in assistance towards the erect ion and enlargement of churches, schools, and parsonages throughout the diocese. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College to-day the following resolution was carried:—“That the Government be requested to reserve an additional 5000 acres of agricultural land to defray the expenses of a Medical School in Christchurch, and that the chairman be authorised to communicate with the Government with a view to obtain legislative enactment giving the right of entry to the Chriatchurch Hospital to the professors, lecturers, and students of the Medical School when established for the purpose of medical teaching.” Nelson, Monday. . The Volunteers were reviewed at Richmond to-day, in the presence of a considerable number of people, by the Hon. Major Richmond, C. 8., who complimented them on their efficiency, and congratulated them on the fact that the encomiums passed on them on previous occasions had been fully endorsed by Col. Packe, when on his tour of inspection in March last. Dunedin, Monday. A grocery store at the corner of Fort and Dundee streets was destroyed by fire on Saturday. It was the property of Mr. J. Clegg, of Arrowtown, and was occupied by Nathan W. Moyse, grocer. Insurances : South British Insurance Company, for the stock, £4OO, and for furniture, £IOO ; whilst in the Standard the stock was insured for £4OO, and the furniture for £l5O. The loss, over and above the insurances, is estimated at £324. The two cottages destroyed are one of Mr. Eldridge'a, and one belonging to Mr. Clegg. Mr. Clegg’s cottage is insured in the South British Insurance Company for £7O ; it was valued at £SO. A man named Donald McSweeney, whilst walking on the railway line between Sawyer Bay and St. Leonards, was overtaken by a train and knocked down, late on Saturday night. Yesterday he was removed to the hospital, where it was ascertained that his left knee and several of his ribs were broken. A jasparite stone, beautifully smooth and polished, was found on Friday at the end of one of the cross drives of the Wetherstone claim. It weighs about a ton, and was taken as carefully as possible, with the view of saving it for presentation to Dr. Hector, who recently expressed a desire to obtain a perfect specimen of any of these stones for the Colonial Museum. Around the stone was found some fine specimens of coarse water-worn gold. Tdiabu, Monday.
The sanitary condition of this district has greatly improved during the past month. The number of patients in the hospital last Saturday was 39, against 51 on the same date last month.
