SPORTING

Last night was fined for the general entries for the Wellington Racing Club’s annual meeting, which conies oft on the Hutt Racecourse ou the 6th and 7th of next month, and the final acceptances were also made for the Gold Cup. Compared with former year.-, the results of the general entries have been very satisfactory. Last year there were three entries for the Maiden Plate ; this year, 7 ; for the Hurdle Race 4, against 5 this year ; for the Flying Stakes Handicap, 11 to. 12 ; for the Derby, 3 to 4 ; for the Cup, 11 to 13 ; for the Hutt Park Stakes, 10 to 8 (a d-. crease of 2) ; for the Provincial (now Empire) Plate, 7 to S ; for the Hurdle Handicap, (i t) 7 ; for the Racing Club Handicap, 13 to 16 ; and for the Free Handicap there are this year eleven entries. It will thus be seen that in all the events, with the exception of the Hutt Park Stakes, there has been an increase of entries. This is not the only cause for congratulation. The racecourse privileges have this year realised about £IOO more than last year ; the club comprises fifty members adiitional to those on last year’s roll; and the amount of public money offered comes to something over £I4OO. It will he seen that the final acceptances for the Cup leave a field of thirteen, but it is not probable that more than eight at the out.-ide will go for it.

The six horses brought tip from the South on Sunday were taken to the Hutt yesterday, and they will commence work this morning. Mr. Andrew Young’s Sailor has been doing some capital work at Lyell Bay, under Ted Murphy, and yesterday morning he took a splendid gallop. He was in such excellent form, and made the pace ao hot, that his owner only wished that the Cup was to be run for yesterday. Sailor will be taken to the Hutt to-morrow, and on Thursday morning ha will do his first gallop ou the course.
