Herald says;—“Tu the Victorian Legislative Assembly recently Mr. Gaunson asked the Premier whether his attention had been drawn to the agitation in other colonies respecting the Chinese, and whether it was the intention of the Government to bring in any Bill, either for levying a poll tax on them, or otherwise dealing with the Chinese difficulty. Mr. Berry said that some time ago he had replied to a commanication from the Colonial Secretary of Queensland upon the Chinese question, and he had not hesitated to express his sympathy with the action taken by that colony in grappling with the subject. The difficulty had now arisen in New South Wales, but he did not think the question had in Victoria assumed proportions which required any special legislative action, but the Government would not refrain from dealing with with the matter in the spirit indicated, if the necessity arose.
