The amount of Customs duties received at this port for the week ending January 2nd was as under

IVc report no variation in quotations, which keep pretty steady at tho low rates which have ruled for some time past, and which from the constant influx of new importations show no symptoms of improvement. Tlie reduced duties on sugar of id per lb, and on tea of 2d per lb, came into operation on the Ist, but owing to the holidays wo have not ye t been able to note tho effect in trade. George Thomas reports markets as follows; —Flour (Adelaide), 18s, very scarce ; do (colonial), £lolos to SU ; oats, 4s 6d, In full supply ; bran, Is, market full; wheat, 4s : hams, tOd ; bacon, Od ; cheese, 7d; -uaizo, ss, scarce ; pollard, 7s; butter, lOd; potatoes, Js, with-downward tendency. Mr. Binney reports that business has not been very brisk during tho past week, as the holidays have Interfered with It. Local millers have reduced the price of first quality flour 20s per ton. Tho mills on ihc East Coast are at a standstill for want of rain. OAMAEU. Friday. Notwithstanding the fact that tho season has been yore dry than usual the cereal crops we now looking

remarkably weU in this district. Should favorable weather prevail between now and harvest time the average yield of grain is expected to bo higher than for years past- Considering that the grain yield in other parts of the colony, particularly in Canterbury, Is not expected to he so large this year, the farmers here look forward to obtaining good prices, particularly for oats. During tho past week little business has been done in grain, and breadstuffs are at quotations as last given. •
