It-Is stated that the Great Eastern has t»een purchased by a company, -who intend using her as a cattle boat to ply between Texas and London. She Is now being fitted out in Mllferd Haven, and is to have new engines and boilers manufactured on the Clyde at a cost ol £IO,OOO. Refrigerators will be built In her for the purpose of carrying fresh beef. It is estimated that she will carry 2000 head of cattle and 3000 head of mutton. The new steamer Hula left for Wanganui yesterday afternoon. ....

The steamer Kennedy, from Nelson, arrived at the wharf yesterday morning. She left the Boulder Bank on Monday evening, and experienced a strong norwest gale across the Strait. Messrs. W. and O. Turnbull's new barque Alexa was brought to the wharf by Pilot Simms yesterday morning. During the day she was visited by a number of visitors. Her cabin is very nicely fitted up. The wood work is of teak and mahogany, with maple panelling relieved with gold. The lounges are of black horsehair, substantial and comfortable. The. main entrance to the saloon is from the break of the poop; opposite to this there is another entrance in' front of the wheel, so that a current.of cool and fresh air, if necessary, is continually passing through the apartment. This must of itself be a great acquisition in tropical latitudes. The accommodation for the seamen is superior to anything that has been seen in Wellington for a very long time. Tho hatches of the Alsxa were opened to-day, and the hold was as dry as the day she was launched. She will commence discharging on Friday, and is expected to,have quick despatch. Previous to her making her first trip to China, she will be taken on the slip to be cleaned. She has boon five months in the water, so that, her bottom must be very foul. The steamers Kennedy, for Nelson, and Lyttelton, for Blenheim, sailed last night.
