Auckland, Monday. ’ Devaux was sworn Acting Governor. Lieutenant Commander Moore, of the Alacrity, was fined £2O for a breach of quarantine regulations. A Chinaman has been fined £IOO for smuggling opium. There is great dissatisfaction re Crown grants. A party of native officers sent by Natu Eskeli, rako of a province, to capture an offender, committed a great outrage. They confined ail the male inhabitants of the village in one hovel, and the females in another, and subjected the latter, despite their cries and struggles, to indiscriminate violation. On intelligence reaching the European officer at Nameuea, lie ordered the arrest of the offenders, and 40 were punished. A German at one of the Line Islands has been murdered by natives.
News from Solomon. Islands shows it was p.ot Wright who was killed, but a man named Townsend. A boy employed by him was also seriously speared.
