CARTERTON.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) August 7. A cheque for the handsome sum of £34 19s. was received by the chairman of the Library Committee from the Education Board, being the share o f the Government grant in aid of public libraries, and I believe a committee meeting will be held as early as practicable, to consider the most advantageous means of disposing of the money. The late Mr. William Walker, who held debentures on the Episcopalian Church to the amount of £3O, has willed this amount iu its favor, and leaves it without liability. Messrs. Garrick and Co, under whose auspices the Wairarapa Weekly Guardian, was started, have sold out to Messrs. Bennett and Beckett, who give notice that they are arranging for its issue bi-weekly, Smith and Co,, with their panorama of the Franco-Prussian war, visited this district last week, and exhibited on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, but on both nights there was bat a very small attendance. The chairman of the Carterton Local Board has received a letter from the Featherston Local Board, asking for an opinion as- to the desirability of celebrating the opening of the railway into the Wairarapa Valley, which will probably take place in about four weeks, and to decide whether it is desirable in the first instance to call a meeting in each township to discuss the matter, or whether the various boards should take it upon themselves to provide for its celebration. The beard meets tomorrow evening, when they will consider the matter.
