PALMERSTON NORTH.
(from our own correspondent.) August 8. The snowstorm here on Thursday morning last caused considerable excitement, as the people from tho old country were strongly reminded of Home, and many of the born colonials had an opportunity of handling snow for tho first time in their lives. As X wired you to day, there were two smart shocks of earthquake at eight o’clock this morning, running from north to south, with an interval of a few seconds only. So far as I can ascertain, no damage was done, except perhaps to a few cups aud safleers or so. There are now two vacancies in the Manawatu County Council; one from Mr. Hec;or McDonald’s sudden death, and the other from Mr. Loudon’s sudden resignation during the last sitting of the Council. The square is at last ornamented by some very tall, thin lamps; but wo have not yet had an opportunity of seeing whether they answer tho purpose of making the town look more cheerful at night, as they have not yet been lighted. _____
