He goes out with clear views as to what is required of him and of the force which will be under his orders. He will probably adopt the squadron as the unit of organisation and formation—a principle too long neglected in our army at home. . But his squadron will be subdivided into a number of small parties or groups of from throe to five men, each, of which will invariably act together and in concert, so that no single trooper will be exposed to the danger of being cut off. At the same time Major Russell will no doubt gladly accept all that he finds suitable in arms and equipment; to change either in the mi Ist of active operations would be a'nrstale* What the local levies need most are leacUis, and instruction in broad military principUe, These Major Russell and his colleagues will satisfactorily supply.
