Miss Brown, and Mr. Jones. The Ceractes, from London, reports a succession of heavy gales. On May 18 the vessel was struck by a terrific squall, which almost threw her on her-beara ends. The upper foretopsail and upper maintopmast stay and mainsail were blown away, and three jibs and three staysails were split, oua being a new one. There were also destroyed the jib pennants and other running gear. • PORT CHALMERS, Thursday. Arbived : The French barque St. Louis, from Bordeaux. 112 days out. She brings 700 tons cargo (wines and brandies. &c.); 200 tons arc for Wellington. Captain Chalmers reports meeting terrific . weather across the Southern Oco ■n. Sailed: Trelovan Family, for Newcastle. The time-ball may be used to-day for rating chronometers. A slight accident at 12 o'clock prevented the ball from dropping yesterday. The barque Anna Melhnisb, which was damaged during her trip from Newcastle, is being repaired by Messrs. Coffey and Dixon. We stated ia yostercliy'a shipping news that the brig Neptune had met with an accident and was being towed in by the barque Aus ralind. The brig only left on Tuesday in company with tho Aostralind, and when off Cape Campbell a sea carried away her gudgeon, which placed her ia a very precarious position. Fortunately, however, the vustraliad was closo *t hand, and took the disabled vessel ia tow. Directly Captain Williams heard of tho accident, ho engaged the services of the steamer Wallace to tow tho vessel in, and she was tak-n round to the Slip yesterday morning, whore the necessary repairs wilt b« effected.
