' TO THEBDITOB OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. ; Sib, —In this age of progress and improvement Welfington stands her ground “pretty well, although we all know there is yet a vast amount to do besides the building of a Town Hall. Ido not object to a Town HalL On, the contrary, I think it is a wise thing to have all the Corporation offices clustered together. Nearly every city and town have their Town Hall buildings; but the Corporation has a large quantity of land, which I might be utilised more beneficially [ for the public interest. For instance, there is all that'area " about Mount" Victoria, and especiallyoh. the opposite side* where there are ample gentle slopes, and quite an English looking valley, stretching down to' the road close by the Slip. The Corporation and the other owners might devise some.meaas to 1 bring, all this fines land into greater usefulness, but at present the road is long round by the sea-shore to Evans Bay, and the other road is hilly between Adelaideroad and the sea. Mount Victoria itself is-a narrow ridge, l which could ;be easily pierced. Therefore, 1 think the Corporation, the, other • proprietors, and the Tramway Company should consider whether it might not be advisable to tunnel the hill, commencing in the -line of Majoribanka-streat, and ■connecting. Evans Bay with the city, by an.extension of the tramways. A large • amount of valuable; building sites would thus ; at once be made available fop the residents of the city, away from the town," T and yet ; near, to., the town by easy, access, , Nothing could be more beneficial to a, busy . business community, for the change of; sir ■ would be remarkable.. The atmospheres at the ocean beach and in the narrow, streets of . Wellington must.be-very different, and as a. Shareholder . in the Tramway, Company I ..believe the tunnel idea isdne well worthy of consideration. I wonder if l our worthy Mayor willview the matter in the same fight. Hw is an earnest progress man, and .is certainly “ the right man in the right place.” If, the <Maydr think favorably of this, suggestion, T hope he will move in the matter. ' I 'feel satisfied the tramWays"will be' a‘great success. No tramway company ever yet “ caved in” in America. That speaks volumes.—l am,
