It was recently’announced, with convenient vagueness, that “ telegrams, state that there ore loud, complaints in Timaru from people who cannot get money due to them from the Government." If any telegrams have con-.
tained such a stitement the senders of them had knowledge not possessed by those in Christchurch auo Timaru, who would lie likely first to have ’suth ; or the ste;tement was simply, invented. - There have hot been such cOmplamtjS,.and there,has not been reason for complaining, other Ithan existed during a single day, [when the transference’of the prorihcial atc'ourits took place. Whatever” force there was ih the' statements of alleged suffering in Wellngton on and about the Ist owing -to' provincial . cheques not being promptly paid, tht Colonial Government were hot blanieablf;' ’aid it is not now worth inqifc; ihg 'tb whom Wane was due. In one provincial district,' perhaps; "there has been " some slight delay in- making payments;, but it is attributable to - the fact' that'funds were not immediately availible, hot to any fahlt of the ;he!w system or to! any neglect in its working. The author of the statement quoted iif ethe opening lines of tlis article, may “ imagine” that complaints smlar to those which, he says, “ telegrams state” to have been made in Timaru, “ are pretty rife over most'parts of the colony if the truth were known;” but he may accept the assurance that Ba imaginings have no relation to the truth. ;
