The Union Company’s steamer Ladybird sailed for Lyttelton and Dunedin at 3 p.m. yesterday. The schooner Saucy Lass, for Pelorus Sound, sailed yesterday at noon. The schooner Reward arrived at Wangsrei from this port on the 16th inst., after a passage of 18 hours. The schooner Unity also arrived there on the 18th from this port. The unfortunate apprentice, P. Moore, who fell from the main yard of the ship Howrah on her passage from Nelson to this port, was removed to.the hospital on Saturday afternoon, where he was shown every attention. The poor yonng fellow never rallied, but gradually sank, and at 8 o’clock on Sunday night he breathed his last. The flags on the shipping in port yesterday were hoisted half-mast high out of respect for the deceased. The p.s. Manawatu sailed for 'Wanganui at 6 o’clock last evening, and the s.s. Stormbird also sailed for the same port an hour afterwards. - From a private letter received by a firm in town from Captain Malcolm, of the barque St. Andrews Castle, we leam that that vessel arrived at Asteria, Oregon, on the 4th October, after a passage of 51 days. Splendid weather with light winds were experienced on the run, , The captain says In a portion of his letter—“ There is nothing doing in the grain trade, several vessels lying here sinking.’’ The ketch Otaki for Otaki. and schooner Ruby for White Rock, sailed yesterday forenoon. Captain Greeves, of the ship Howrah, on behalf of himself and the immigrants, wishes ns to express his thanks to Captain Fairchild, of the s.s. Hinemoa, for his kindness in towing them into port on Saturday. The s.a. Eangatira steamed round to Evans Bay yesterday forenoon to adjust her compasses, and returned again to the wharf in the afternoon. She will sail for Napier and Poverty Bay this evening at 4 o’clock. The s.s. Murray sailed at 4 a.m. yesterday for Nelson and West Coast. The clipper ship St. Leonards Is; annonneed elsewhere as the second of Shaw, Savill, and Co.’s passenger lino of packets, to load at this port for London, She Is expected to be despatched about the sth of January. The ship Howrah was towed up from the outer anchorage yesterday. afternoon iby .the s.s. Moa,- and berthed at the wharf. She will be entered at the Customs to-day, and commence the discharge of her cargo to-morrow. The usual notice to consignees appears elsewhere. The p.s. Lyttelton, Captain Scott, arrived here from the Wairau yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m. She left there on Sunday morning, but anchored Inside the bar to 6 a.ra, yesterday. Fine weather v/as experienced across. The Lyttelton since her last visit to this port has received a thorough overhaul, new decks having been fitted into her, the engines dissected and any defects in them remedied, and the boiler being so repaired that it is now almost equal to new. The Lyttelton will sail to-day at noon for Kekerangl.
