Yesterday the wind had settled into a steady breeze, which enabled the following vessels to sail ' Unity, schooner, for Wanganui; Burchgrove, barque, lor Hokianga ; Marmion, schooner,. for Kaipara ; Falcon, ketch, for Blenheim; Bose of Edin and Canterbury, schooners,* and ketch Reliance, for Pelorns Bound ; and Enterprise, brigantine, for Akiteo. The brig Drover, an Aberdeen built vessel, 31 years old, and. once in the early days of the , colony, a regular trader to this port, arrived here yesterday afternoon. She has always been noted as a remarkably- smart sailer. and this her present run from Newcastle has shown that, although now In her infirm years, her sailing powers are not yet on the wane. She left Newcastle on the 6th instant, and had light northerly wind till the 11th instant, when fresh westerly winds, varying fromN.W. to 8. W, were experienced; made Cape Farewell on the 13th, and had strong breezes in the Strait, having to heave-to on one occasion. Was off the Heads at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and shortly afterwards waaboarded, by Pilot Holmes, who brought her into port. ,Captain Stevens reports sighting the barque Australind from this port on the Bth instant, about 300 miles off Newcastle. The Drover brings a cargo of coals. . On Monday an opportunity was afforded visitors to the Tanpo of seeing the testimonial presented by the officers and crew of the s.s. Wellingtonfto Captain Carey, on the occasion of his leaving that steamer to assume the command of the Tanpo. The presentation was made in Tort Chalmers by Captain Sinclair, and consists of a very massive silver tea and coffee service, the silver bearing the following inscription: —"Presented to Capt. w; Carey, as a souvenir from the officers and crew of the s.s. Wellington, on the occasion of his promotion to, the command of the S.S. Tanpo, Oct. 7,1876." Accompanying the service is a very handsomely illuminated and emblazoned address, which testifies to the esteem in which Capt. Carey was held by his officers and crew. The s.s; Tnl, Captain Bonner, left Lyttelton at 8 p.m. on the 13th, and arrived at Kalkouraat7 a.ra. on the 14th ; left again at 9.30 a.m., and arrived alongside the wharf at 8 o’clock last night. Experienced light N.W.‘ winds on the trip up. The Tui will sail for Foiton to-day. The s.B Hawea, Captain Wheeler, arrived in harbor at'4.2o p.m. yesterday from Northern ports. She left the Manukan at 4.80 p.m. on the 11th, arrived at Taranaki at 7 a.m., and sailed at 9.30 a.m. on the 12th ; reached Nelson at 4 a.m., and sailed at 6.30 p.m., but had to come to anchor on getting outside, owing to a thick fog and heavy squalls of rain ; got under way at 3130 yesterday morning, and arrived at Tlcton at 10.30 a.ra.: sailed at noon and arrived here as above. Experienced strong S.W; wind and sea to Nelson. She sailed for the South at 7.30 p.m. The ship Howrah sailed from Nelson for this port yesterday. If the present N. W. wind continues she should arrive here to-day. ! - ■ The p s Manawatn arrived here from Wanganui at 720 am. yesterday. She left there at 7 o’clock the previous evening, and had a strong,westerly breeze,, with’ heavy sea; to Maha, where it worked into the N W., and continued till arrival hero as above. - She will sail again for Wanganui this afternoon. ; ■ The schooner Unity, bound to Wanganui with railway material, sailed yesterday moniing. The-schooner Shepherdess, which left here on Sunday, brought up in Worser Bay, where she remain ed till yesterday, when she returned to port, the deck cargo having shifted. - , , . The «.«.
