Any difference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. The ship Midlothian, hound from London to this port, put back to Wackwall dock on May 8, with steering gear out of order. The ship Dunbritton, which, as our telegrams recently in formed us, left London for this port, passed Deal on May 5. and was off Dartmouth on the 7th of th Yesterday afternoon a very exciting race took place between Messrs. Seager and Co. s two smart little steamers Matau and Tui. They both hauled away from the wharf together, the T ui being ahead of the Matau by about thirty yards. She stopped so asi to allow the latter to come up on oven terms. Tim Matau came up at full speed, taking the inside position, therefore the Tui had time to get full speed on, the Matau having shot nearly a length ahead, The

bay was as smooth as a millpond. The Tui was very deep in the water: In fact her stern was dragging, but she had a decided advantage over the Matau, as she only came off the slip on Saturday after having her bottom cleaned, besides, the Matau s P r ?P, J er “ not, we understand, suited for her. The Tui did not long stay behind, but gradually crept up on her adversary until they both got on even terms, viewed from the Terrace the Tui seemed to have a slight advantage on the run down the bay, but it was scarcely possible to tell which was first. In the turning the Tui was at a disadvantage, being outside, she having had the largest curve to get round, consequently she 1 lost ground, and the Matau rounded the point about half a length ahead. The trial of speed was to have finished at the Heads, but as to how it ended wo are not in a position to state. The race was witnessed by quite a largo number of people. Messrs. McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co.’s splendid steamer Ringarooma, Capt. John McLean, with the Suez mail on board, arrived in our harbor at 7 o’clock yesterday morning. She left Melbourne at 2.30 p.m. on the 1 20th Juno, passed Swan Island at noon the following day, and arrived at the Bluff at 6 a.m. on the Ist July; left at 4 p.m. same day, and arrived at Port Chalmers at 7 a.m. on the 2nd: left at 4 p.m. on the 3rd, and arrived at Lyttelton at 7 a.m. on the 4th; left at 6 p.m. same day, arriving here at 7 o clock yesterday morning. Experienced S.XV. winds with line weather from Melbourne, and S.E. winds with line weather on the New Zealand coast. We have to thank Mr. Jago, purser, for report and safe delivery of our Melbourne and Southern flies. Shortly after 9 o’clock last night the Ringarooma sailed for Nelson. The schooner Endeavor, Captain Dick, with a cargo of colonial produce from Oamaru, arrived here at 5 a.m. yesterday. She left Oamaru on Monday night, and had a strong southerly wind all the way. After discharging her Wellington cargo she will sail for Havelock, having on board about 16 tons produce for that port. At Havelock she will load timber for Oamaru, and thence she sails to Auckland with a cargo of produce. , , The s.s. Ladybird sailed for Napier at 10.30 a.m. Unity and Reward and the ketch Thames sailed for Pelorus Sound: and the schooner Garron, for Picton, took her departure yesterday. Owin? to the light southerly airs and the flood tide, they had all to come to an anchor inside the Heads. They would probably get out on last night s tide. The s.s. Kiwi was able to proceed on her voyage for the East Coast yesterday morning. . , . The steamers Manawatu and Stormbird arrived in our harbor yesterday morning; the former at 9.20, and the latter at 10 o’clock. Their protracted passages are due to their having encountered an unusually severe southerly gale with a tremendous sea. The Manawatu will sail for Wanganui this evening at 5 The s.s. Napier, Captain Butt, left Foxton at 3 p.m. on the 3rd, but was unable to cross the bar owing to a strong southerly gale till 7.15 a.m. yesterday. Called at Kapiti on the way down, and took on board the crew of the Eliza McPhee and 73 bags of her cargo, and arrived here at 10 p.m. Experienced fine southeast weather all the way down. Passed the Matau off Terawiti at 5 p.m. Saw the ketch Elizabeth, from this port, anchored off Long Point, and the cutter Dido anchored inside Mana, where she had probably run for shelter. Reports the schooner Clio, from this port, as having arrived and discharged her cargo in Foxton. The Napier brings a cargo of 100 sheep for Mr. Gear. She will sail for Rangitikei this evening.
