Mr. W. R. Williams, who was nominated to contest the seat for Lambtou Ward in the City Council, has withdrawn his candidature, so that Mr. Lewis Moss will have a walk over. A meeting of the Wellington Football Club was held last evening at the Union Hotel for the purpose of malting the necessary arrangements with the Auckland team. The Secretary laid before the meeting a letter which ho had received from the captain of the Aucklane team, stating that his team would probably play in Wellington on the 18th instant; if not, they would be able to play a match on their return from the South, about the 25th inst. It was then proposed, and carried unanimously, that a committee bo formed consisting of Messrs. McLean, Palliser, Werry, Lynch, Parks, and James, for organising a team to play the Auckland men. It was then proposed, and carried unanimously, that a committee consisting of Messrs. McLean, Palliser, James, Werry, tlppard, and Campbell, be appointed to make the necessary arrangements for the reception of the Auckland team. The Auckland team will leave Auckland per as. Hawea on the Xsth inst. The third lecture of the course will bo delivered at St. John’s Presbyterian schoolroom, on Monday evening, by W. Hutchison, Esq., M.P.0., subject—“ James Watt, and the first time when steam was got up.”
The number of visitors to the Church of England Diocesan bazaar was in no wise diminished during the course ,of yesterday. The fair vendors were as assiduous as ever in disposing of the thousand and one things of beauty and usefulness which adorn the various stalls, and were equally successful in gathering in the golden harvest. The Hon. Sir J. L. 0. Richardson has consented to deliver a lecture on “ China ” at St. Paul’s school, Sydney-street, in aid of St. Paul’ Cathedral organ fund. Those who heard the lecturer on a former occasion will, we are sure, take care to be present, and to those who purpose hearing it we can promise a treat. Doubtless the organ fund will receive a sensible addition. The Union Steamship Company of New Zealand have issued a very neat and comprehensive table, printed on small cards, for the year 1875. To travellers and the public generally it will be extremely useful, giving as it does in tabular form the hours of departure and arrival from the various New Zealand ports of the several vessels employed by the company. It contains also a complete railway guide, which is calculated to prove of no inconsiderable convenience. A correspondent complains in a somewhat lengthy espistle of an unjust paragraph which has at some time appeared in the columns of an evening contemporary with respect to a Resident Magistrate’s Court case, Alpin v. Nilly, but his grievance would appear to have been occasioned by the judgment of the R. M., and a magistrate has only to deal with the merits of a case as it comes before him. The Dadies’ Sewing Committee, in connection with St. John’s Presbyterian Church, held their usual sale of fancy articles, children's clothing, and sundries in Berlin wool yesterday. As intimated these sales are held monthly, and the Ladies’ Committee meet every Thursday for the purpose of preparing articles for the monthly sales. The proceeds of the sales are applied in liquidation of the debt incurred in enlarging the schoolroom. The September number of the Monthly Review and Educational Gazette is even better than the former numbers issued by the new proprietor. The leading article is upon “Inspectors,” who are not “Admirable Crichtons” in the eyes of the author, who, has skilfully carried the war into the enemies country ; for, as he justly remarks, inspectors in criticising teachers, lose sight of their own shortcomings, and ignore the fact that they require as much training as schoolmasters themselves.
