Oue readers will recollect that some question was raised in the House of Representatives on Friday, relative to the estimate of revenue derivable from the sale of confiscated lands for the year 1875-76, and a return was asked for by Sir Geoege Grey, together with the reports of the district officers on which this estimate was based. The following return has been laid on the table by Major Atkinson : Auckland Province— Bay of Plenty £2,000 Waikato 3,000 Patutahi .. 40,000 £45,000 Taranaki Province— Whenuakewa District .. •. £2,663 Okutuka District .. .. .. 4,183 Carlyle Town Extension .. ~ 1,929 Land under survey for succeeding sale after September, 1875 .. 9.175 £17,070 Wellington Province— Oputuka District £7,480 Carlyle Town Extension .. 1,071 Land under survey .. .. 1,499 £10,050 . This shows a total estimated receipt from the sale of confiscated lands in three provinces of the North Island, up to the 30th June, 1876, of £73,000. Should any considerable portion of the newlyacquired estate in the North Island be brought into the market, the receipts under the head of land revenue would bo very considerably increased. It is evident that the Government do not intend to force land sales. In this we think they act with prudence. A higher price will be obtained by placing land on the market from time to time to meet the demands for actual settlement.
