[Peu Press Agenov.] - Auckland, Monday. The Mayor to-day laid the foundation-stone of the Auckland Waterworks. About 150 guests, invited by the contractors, were present, and partook of a collation afterwards. The Rev. Mr.’ Penny, who recently ai-rived at Melbourne to join the Melanesian Mission does not come as Bishop, as stated in the Australian telegrams, but only as a clergyman. He is expected per Cyphrenes. Gbahamstown, Monday. William Booker, recently from Ricoarton, Canterbury, disappeared from amongst his mates at Ohinemuri on Thursday last. Search was-made on Friday and Saturday, and yesterday his body was found in a creek, in eighteen feet of water. It is supposed he fell while climbing over the rocks, and struck against a rock, as one eye w-as much bruised. Over seventy men were engaged in the search. The body was brought into Mackaytown, and the coroner proceeded there to-day to hold an inquiry. New Plymouth, Monday. The tourists’ grievance at the Lakes regarding hotel accommodation is lessened, Hannon having opened a new house at Ohiuemutu. Sir D. McLean is still at Maketu, interviewing the disputing Arawas. Nothing doing at Taurauga. Napier, Monday. Fourteen of the crew of the Hudson having refused to work were sentenced to one' month’s imprisonment. The captain was given the option of taking them on board, and he took eight in irons. The Hudson sailed for Lyttelton last night.
The City Council have instructed the enginer to prepare plans for a water-supply for the lower part of the town, on the artesian system. Nelson, Monday. The review passed off most successfully, and Major Richmond complimented the Volunteers and Captain Marshall highly on the state of the efficiency of the men. The competition between the Nelson and Wellington Artillery was very keen and most interesting. In some of the movements Nelson waa best, and in others Wellington. A large concourse of spectators and Volunteers will return to town about ten o’clock to-night. The Wellington men leave by the Phoebe to-morrow. Westpoiw, Monday. The last shipment of cattle ox St. Hilda, from Wanganui, is not yet sold. The grain market is bare. Potatoes, local supply good.
