THE SCHOOLS.
MRS. JOHNSON S LADIES' SEIIINARY. The fifth annual entertainment given by the pupils of Mrs. Johnson's Ladies' Seminary, Park Villa, came off in the hall of the Mechanics' Institute, Lower Hutt, on the evening of the 23rd current. The room was crowded to excess, many of the spectators having to stand on forms outside araund the door. The performances included instrumental music on the piano and harmonium, vocal music by all the pupils, and recitations. The " Agnes Sorrel" quadrille, " Warblings at Eve," and " Chime again Beautiful Bells," were remarkably well played by Miss Julia Pyke. " Kelvin Grove," with variations, and several other pieces, were skilfully rendered by Miss Martha Fry. Miss Matilda Swafford, Miss Alice Liverton, Miss Kate Valentine, Miss Sarah Mountain, and a few others, gave some solos and duets on the piano, in a very creditable manner. The vocal selections (to harmonium accompaniment) were extremely well sung, and elicited much applause. Among the recitations were particularly noticed "Absalom," by Miss Matilda Swafford; " The Triumphs of the English Language," by Miss Martha Fry ; an "Abridgement of English History" by Miss Julia Pyke ; "Parental Affection," by Miss E. Ransom ; the " Two Wishes," by Miss Alice Ashton, and "The "Well of St. Keyne," by Miss Laura Welch. Mr. A. Young'delivered the prizes and Christmas gifts, with which the pupils appeared to be highly delighted, and, at the conclusion, thanked the audience, on behalf of Mrs. Joluison, for-their attendance. Mr. Grace responded in suitable language, and the proceedings terminated with the National Anthem.
