[Press Telegraph Agency.] Auckland, Monday. A seizure has been made of twenty-five pounds of tobacco at the house of one Conley, a waterman. Miss Christian has been engaged by the Choral Society to sing the solos in the oratorio of the “ Messiah” on Wednesday night. Christchurch, Monday. On Friday the city lodges of Good Templars presented the Hon. W. Fox with an address prior to his departure for England. The address was signed by lodge officers representing 756 members. - The anniversary sports came off on Saturday, and were a great success. Lyell, Monday. The National Bank forwarded from here to-day to Reefton 1920 ounces of gold, the proceeds of recent crushings from the Lyell reefs. Nelson, Monday. The first crushing of the Golden Ridge claim, Anatori, yielded 310 ounces from 130 tons of stone. Volunteers Tomlinson and Burnes only have qualified, with 97 and 85 respectively. Dunedin, Monday. The firing for the selection of five colonial representatives resulted as follows :—McKenzie, 91; Marshall, 92 ; Wilson, 91; McLaren, 90 ; Goldie, 88 ; Richardson, 86 ; 85; Christie, 88 ; Blatch, 83. Two companies fired under protest, having to fire amidst pelting rain, while three competitors from the Waikouaiti Rifles retired, after making good results at 200 and 100 yards, for the same reason. The shooting this year has caused general dissatisfaction. Several floods have occurred at Arrowtown, which will interfere greatly with the Christmas washing-up. John Hartley, who was knocked down by a broken lamp post when trying to stop a runaway horse on Saturday, died at the Hospital to-day from concussion of the brain. The other man who was injured has almost entirely recovered.
