From thence, till making Cape Farewell, which was passed at noon on the 9 h, hart fine northerly winds. Had variable winds from Cape Farewell till abreast of Stephen's Island ; from thence till arrival off Terawiti. S.E., and from Terawiti to her anchorage light N.AV. winds. Waitara, which left for Tongaporutu on Saturday last, returned to Waitara yesterday, bringing a load of sleepers of black birch, split by Tarnati McClatchy's people. Captain Earle describes the river as being very difficult of access ; the channel is narrow, and very shallow, even at spring tides, with sharp turns, lie is of opinion that it should be entered only at spring tides by a steamer the size of the Waitara. Mr. W. J>. Webster (who visited the Tongaporutu Kiver) informs us that its banks are very picturesque, and that the district is heavily timbered. Great kindness was shown to the crew of the tug by the residents, and we are glad to see this portion of the province opened up by direct trade. —Taraiuiki Herald. Dec. 9. Whalino in Foveaux Stiiait.—The whaling ship Eliza Adams, Capt. Hamlyn, i>assed through the strait till* morning, bound to the Solanders, where she intends cruising for a time.
