THE RIMUTAKA TUNNEL.
Sin, —I have been told lately" that the work was commenced with vigor ; that there were night and day shifts of eight hours, instead of four hours, stated to be the correct arrangement. At a later period, the work proceeded very slowly, and that men would not remain because they did not get the rate due for that special description of labor; and that now four times the meu could bo advantageously employed as are at present working at the tunnel. I have heard nothing in reference to trap rook having been met with, but there is a report of a man once at work at the tunnel having, while fossicking about—to which he is much addicted —found coal iu one of the streams, which ho has exhibited. Surely,* if there bo any truth in these statements, the Government will forthwith interfere, and cause rapid progress to bo made. I hope we are not to have such delay as we witness over the Hutt railway bridge—the iron for which, I believe, has not yet arrived, though miles of railway, long completed and handed over by the contractoi', continue entirely useless to the public—a mero eyesore in fact. —I am, &c, Samuel Kevaxs.
