SIR GEORGE GREY'S LAND FUND PETITION.
The following correspondence has been published :
Superintendent's Office, Auckland, 7th November, 1874. —Sir, —Herewith I have the honor to forward to your Excellency, for transmission to the Right Honorable the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the enclosed copy of a petition addressed to me, as Superintendent, by Sir George Grey, K.8.C., of the Island of Kawau, within thi3 province, having reference to the appropriation of the fund arising from the sale of lands within this colony. I have consulted my Executive Council as to the course which should be adopted in order to comply with the prayer of the petition, namely, " that the Provincial Government should take such steps as may be judged most expedient to protect the rights of the inhabitants of the province of Auckland in this matter, and to delay any hurried action of the British Parliament in relation thereto ;" and it was considered that the proper and constitutional course is to forward a copy of the petition to your Excellency for transmission accordingly. I trust that the importance of the subject of this petition will commend it to your Excellency's early consideration, in order that the petition may be transmitted to Her Majesty's Imperial Government" by the earliest possible opportunity.—l have, &c, (signed) J. Williamson, Superintendent of the province of Auckland.—To His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand. Government House, Wellington, New Zealand, 14th November, 1874. Sir, —I' am directed by the Governor to acknowledge his receipt of your Honor's letter of the 7th November, forwarding "for transmission to the Secretary of State, the enclosed copy of a petition addressed to your Honor as Superintendent by Sir George Grey, K.C.8., having reference to the appropriation of the fund arising from the sale of lands within the colony." His Excellency regrets that he must regard it as a course at once irregular and inconvenient to comply with your Honor's request, that this petition. addressed to your Honor as Superintendent of Auckland should be transmitted by the Governor of this colony to the Imperial Government, but I am to add that any proper representation which Sir George Grey or your Honor and your Executive may please to address directly to Her Majesty or to the Secretary of State, will be promptly transmitted by his Excellency in the usual course. —I have, &c. (signed) Francis A. Habe;, Private Secretary. His Honor, the Superintendent of Auckland.
