The Government Resident at Somerset reports the despatch of a boats' crew to the scene of the wreck of the barque Batavia, coal laden, from Newcastle. Found her in such a position as to lead to the suspicion that the vessel was purposely stranded. The drought continues, causing great losses in stock and crops. An inquiry is being held into the alleged immoral conduct of the officers of the immigrant ship Suffolk. There are seventeen charges against the captain, chiefly of immorality.
