[from a correspondent.] Auckland, Wednesday. The Cross states that Mr. Williamson, the Superintendent, and Mr. Sheehan, the Provincial Secretary, intend to proceed immediately to England to arrange for the bringing out of 5000 immigrants for a special settlement, to be formed under the Aucldand Waste Lands Act of last year. The Cross condemns the project as unwarrantable, and as being competitive with the immigration scheme of the General Government. It also hints the probability of an object underlying the proposal having something to do with Sir George Grey’s petitions on provincialism, and the disposal of the waste lands of the colony. Fifteen hundred pounds have been provided towards the expenses of the mission, under a special warrant the Superintendent. -JUiuJgJf■ arrangements, the General Government not being likely to consent to such a step, in view of the ample provision existing under the General Government scheme. It has been stated later that the Colonial Secretary offers no objection. The disclosure has taken the public by surprise, and the movement is generally condemned. James Naughton, Secretary of the Hibernian Society (formerly of the Customs, Auckland), was summoned at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, to-day, for unlawfully dealing with and holding a sum of money, the property of the Society. The case was adjourned for a week owing to tho absence of a material witness. The Ohiuomuri correspondent of tho Advertiser reports that Maokay has commenced business with the Natives. The Maoris held a meeting at Shortlaud on Monday, and condemned the proclamation prohibiting the sale of land by the Natives to any one but Government. Tho Advertiser gives the following translation of the circular lately circulated amongst the Natives :—“ Hold on ! Hold on ! Hold on ! Wait the arrival of Mr. McLean ; he is the principal man ; he is the Minister for tho Maori side; he will consider the correct regulation for the welfare of the people. Tho practice of issuing licenses is very wrong ; it is a treacherous proceeding. It has neither head nor tail. From Mr. Dickson." CHRISTCHURCH RACES. Christchurch, Wednesday.
