The subsidised mail steamer Star of the South arrived iu Auckland yesterday from Fiji, having left Levuka on the Ist instant. The details of the annexation have been telegraphed in sufficient fullness to show that the cession to Great Britain is complete, the King, Maafu, and the leading chiefs of botli the windward and leeward islands having signed the deed, and joined iu presenting visible tokens of submission to the Queen's authority. A Government has been formed, for the temporary government of the affairs of the islands, of which Mr. Layard is the head. The cession seems at once to have stimulated the energies of the white residents, and various works of improvement, and public works of a repi-oduc-tive character, have already been entered upon. It is not a bad proof of the probable value of the trade of the islands, under British rule, that the Star of the South comes fully loaded with the produce of the group.
