THE LOWER HUTT.
PROPOSED NEW CHURCH. An adjourned special meeting of the parishioners of St. James’ and Christchurch, Hutt, was held in the church school-room on Tuesday evening last, to receive the report of a committee appointed on a previous evening to examine into the state of the present building of St. James’, and to determine what further steps should be taken for the erection of a new church. The treasurer read a statement showing that he had received towards the building fund the sum of ,£64 9s. 7d., the proceeds of popular entertainments given in the Hutt, and also £29 35., in the shape of subscriptions given by persons outside the parish. The report of the committee was read. It showed that a sum of between £4OO and £SOO, at the least, would require to be laid out on the old building to raise it out of the reach of floods, and put it in a thorough state of repair. The report having been received, and ordered to be entered on the minutes of the meeting’s proceedings, the following resolutions were passed : “ That this meeting, after having heard the ■ report of the committee appointed to examine into the present state of St. James’ Church, is of opinion that it is inexpedient to lay out more on the present building than is absolutely necessary, and that it is desirable a new church should be erected as soon as the necessary funds can be obtained.” “That a subscription list be forthwith opened, and copies distributed.” “ That a fete be held on the 22nd January next, and the proceeds be devoted to the new church building fund.” After another resolution had been passed requesting the curate to convene a meeting of all members of the church, to make arrangements for the proposed fete, the meeting broke up.
