COMMERCIAL.
MELBOURNE. (From the Argus, October 15.) In the import market a moderate amount of business has been transacted, and sales to a fair extent have been recorded. Breadstuffs are now moving off more freely. A larger business in flour than usual went through the auction room this forenoon ; 70 tons were disposed of at £l3. For bakers’ lots, there is a moderate demand at our quotation of £l3 7s. 6d to £l3 10s., bags returned. Wheat is wanted, and sales are readily effected when parcels are offered. We hear of a lino of 700 bags, a mixed parcel of good milling, having changed hands at 6s. 4d., while Cs. Cd. has been got for a small parcel of prime. Oats are very firm. Under the hammer ss. 3d. to ss. Gd. was realised for feeding, and a lino of SOOO bushels Californian is stated to have been taken up at ss. 4d. Maize is steady at ss. Cd.; wo hear of no sellers under. Sugars are in good demand for brewers’ parcels, and sales are reported at up to £3O 10s. Yarraville refined will be sold to-morrow. New teas are moving off in parcels. Of the Eliso’s shipment, sales have commenced to be made About 1000 half-chests have been closed for that as much as 55., duty paid, has been got for the small parcel of pouchong. Tasmanian hops continue to meet with buyers. A lino of 30 bales 1874 has been placed at Is. sd, Sales of currants are mentioned at sld. A line of 50 barrels has been placed at our quotation. Woolpacks are attracting speculative attention. Wo hear of some parcels having been sold at 3s. Oilmen's stores have met with inquiries, and a line of pickles, sauces, &c., has been placed at full rates. We understand that a meeting under the Act is called for Monday next in the estate of Messrs. Samuel Macgregor and Co., the well-known auctioneers of stock and produce, carrying on business at Warrnarabool, Belfast and Stawell. The liabilities, it is rumored, amount to £OO,OOO in round numbers. The first sale of the new clip of wool was held this afternoon at Messrs. R. Goldsbrough and Co.’s wool warehouses. The “opening sale of the season” is always an event of great interest to the mercantile and squatting community, and on this occasion the spacious saleroom was thronged with representatives of the various classes interested. The catalogue submitted comprissed 3200 bales, which included some very fine clips from Riverina. The biddings were animated throughout, and the sale passed off satisfactorily, buyers showing a strong desire to operate at full rates. A few lots were bought in, but offers were so close to reserves that business will likely result privately. Greasy realised from lOd. to 13$d. t the latter being for a superior clip from Riverina; fleece up to 23d.
