OP THE HERO AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, Sunday. The s.s. Hero arrived to-day at half-past 4 o’clock. She left Sydney on the 19th instant, and brings the Suez mail for this port, and the following news : London, October 15. The ship Kingsbridge, bound to Sydney, was in collision with the ship Candahar, for Melbourne, off Lizard Point, and foundered. Ten of those on board were drowned. The Candahar returned to Palmouth damaged. The ship Windsor Castle has put in to Bahia, under jury masts and leaky. Arrived : Scimitar, from New Zealand. Discount is at 4 per cent. The Duchess of Edinburgh has been delivered of a son. In America the democratic party has been strengthened by the return of three of their party to Congress—two from Ohio, and one from Indiana. The Middlepark Stakes were won by Plebeian. October 17. Several Carlist battalions have surrendered. The Basque towns, which are considered the stronghold of the Cariists, are demanding peace. Cairns, the new Governor of Queensland, leaves for Brisbane to-day. The New Zealand mails via San Francisco have been delivered. Wool unchanged ; wheat inactive, at ss. 3d. for Adelaide ; coffee quiet at late quotations ; tin firm, with a tendency to harden, at 925. for Straits, and 91s. for Australian. Sydney, October 17. The Californian and Torres Strait mails were delivered on Thursday, and the Suez mail yesterday. Admiral Richerie, the ex-Govemor of New Caledonia, has arrived here, on his way to. Prance. He has been recalled. Messrs. Bussell and Samuel are still negotiating with regard to the Californian mail, but the matter is almost closed. They have resolved to continue joint action. The Pacific and Sydney offices lose £SOOO- - by the sinking of the ship Kingsbridge. The new wool is arriving slowly, and only one cargo has as yet been cleared. The annual session of the Congregational Union has closed. It declared itself against the continuance of the denominational system-

Pettigrew’s saw-mills, near Brisbane, have been burned down. Advices from the Palmer diggings ai-e to the effect that the miners, starved out, are leaving by the hundred. A famine is feared next winter, unless the Government opens up communioation. A woman named Mackay, living in Brisbane, has poisoned herself and her three children. Adelaide, October 17. The export of breadstulfs for the year amounts to 83,000 tons. Breadstuffs are firm. Wheat, ss. 4d.
