A CORRECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —In your report of the Governor’s speech at the inauguration of the Wellington College, His Excellency’s meaning is not correctly expressed. After saying that he was glad to know that in this and other colonial schools high classical or mathematical attainments were not to be universally insisted on, His Excellency nevertheless “ trusted that as high a standard for the degrees conferred by the older Universities might be obtainable in that Of New Zealand, and that a liberal encouragement would always be given to the, development of higher scholarship, although al good general education would be placed within the reach of all ranks of the people, and not confined merely to those who can find time for the higher branches of learning.” Nothing was further from His Excellency’s intention than to advocate the conferring of so-called learned degrees for a low standard of scholarship as might be thought from your report.—l am, &c., Francis A. Hare, Private Secretary. October 19.
